The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a denomination that was born on the American frontier in the early 1800s out of a longing to unite all followers of Jesus by focusing on the essentials of Christian Faith. This was driven by Jesus' prayer to the Father in John 17 that all of Jesus' followers would be one, even as the Father and Son are one. One expression of that is our shared Confession of Faith:
I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and proclaim Him Lord and Savior of the world.
This confession, we believe, can be affirmed by all followers of Jesus, regardless of other particularlities of theology or practice. Along with this, we affirm the ministry of all believers and the use of reason and intellect to understand Scripture. We are a covenantal church, meaning that each congregation has freedom of governance within a convenant relationship of mutual interdependence with other Disciples congregations. Because we believe that some of Jesus' work on earth is better accomplished by congregations working together, we join ourselves together through area and regional bodies. Forest Grove Christian Church is within the North Texas Area of the Christian Church in the Southwest Region. These gatherings of churches coordinate leadership training, lead our camp and conference programs, provide support and accountability for clergy and congregations, start new churches, and help us maintain a view that the Church is far broader than any one local congregation or gathering of believers.
